.Playwright P.M. Antony passes away
A man who literally set the theatre scene on fire in the State, P.M. Antony, is no more. He was 61. Antony, who was awaiting the first stage-play of his latest drama, American Model Arabikadalil , on Friday, collapsed at his residence in the Mangalam ward here and was pronounced dead at the Alappuzha General Hospital at 6 p.m.
Antony, the founder of Suryakanthi Theatres, shot to fame with his play Christuvinte Aaram Thirumurivu ( The Sixth Wound of Christ ), based on Nikos Kazantzakis's ‘The Last Temptation of Christ,' which was banned in 1986 following protests from the Church and triggered debates on the freedom of expression, apart from witnessing violence where the play was staged.
He penned and staged about 20 plays, includingKadalinte Makkal , which won him a State award for best playwright, and Christuvinte Aaaram Thirumurivu , which earned him a Kerala Sahitya Akademi award. Mandelaku Snehapoorvam Winnie ,Swathanthrayam Allenkil Maranam , and Spartacus were among his popular creations.
Antony, who was branded a Naxalite and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1989 in connection with the 1980 murder of Somarajan, a coir factory owner in Alappuzha, did not give up and replied to the statement of critics that the imprisonment was a ‘punishment of God for his blasphemy' by stating that ‘no God could punish him since he did not believe in any God.' One who defied conventions through his life, Antony had taken up a tour titled Natakayatra of all villages in the State in 2005, in an attempt to do away with the formal structure of conventional theatre. Antony was involved in the recent anti-Endosulfan protest with his own street-plays. He is survived by wife, Gracy, and children Ajitha, Anil, Azad, and Anu. The funeral will be at 5 p.m. at his residence.
