A mathematician who is alive in memory of every school student

king of numbers:Members of the alumni association garlanding the bronze bust of Srinivasa Ramanujan on his birth anniversary at Town HSS, Kumbakonam, on Thursday.
Thursday was of historic significance for the students of the Town Higher Secondary School here. This day of the year has always been important for the school. For they bask in the glory of world renowned mathematical wizard Srinivasa Ramanujan, who had spent his formative years on the premises of this school.
The students, particularly the members of the maths club of the school, made a sincere attempt to celebrate the anniversary of quasquicentennial of their illustrious alumni in a grand manner.
The former headmaster of the school, Raja Viswanathan, made a fervent plea to the local body to name the Sarangapani street, where the house of Srinivasa Ramanujan is located, after the mathematical genius.
In his opinion, this move would immortalise the memory of the late wizard for the future generation to relish.
Mr. Viswanathan shared many exciting incidents happened in the life of Ramanujan, and recalled the mega centenary celebration held in the school 25 years ago. .
The celebration commenced with L.Ragagopalan, an alumni and former principal of government arts college, hoisting the National Flag and garlanding the bronze statue of Srinivasa Ramanujan on the school campus. He narrated the achievements of late Ramanujan during his school and college days, and his studies abroad.
M. Jaganathan, another former headmaster of the school, remembered the childhood days of Srinivasa Ramanujan. The Old Boys' Association of the Town Higher Secondary School too joined the celebration.

Coins from Satavahana period unearthed

 team of researchers from the Government First Grade College in Kuvempunagar has unearthed coins belonging to the Satavahana period in Shikaripura taluk of Shimoga district.
The research team, led by S.G. Ramadasa Reddy, Head, Department of History, B.V. Vasanth Kumar of the Department of Kannada, Government Women's College, Mandya, and Ramakrishna of Soraba, were conducting field survey near Kalamane village on the banks of the river Kumadavati in Anjanapura taluk.
Dr. Reddy said that their field survey yielded 12 lead and “potin” coins that were circular in shape with a diameter of 20 mm x 19 mm, weighing about five grams.
Although this type of coins has been discovered in other parts of the State, this is the first time that these unique “potin” coins had been found in Shimoga district taking back the history of the region to the Satavahana period, said Dr. Reddy.
2nd century AD
These coins are surmised to belong to the 2nd century AD and reckoned to have been issued by the Satavahana rulers Satakarni and Pulmavi. One can decipher the names of the kings in Prakrit language, Brahmi script, with a representation of an elephant engraved on them.
The reverse side has the symbol of Ujjaini.

Health regulatory Bill tabled in Rajya Sabha

A Bill for regulation of standards of health education, and determination, maintenance, coordination and promotion of human resources in the country's health sector was tabled in the Rajya Sabha here on Thursday.
The National Commission for Human Resources for Health Bill, 2011 seeks to establish the National Commission for Human Resources for Health, which will also regulate professional councils in various disciplines of health sector.
Introduced by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Bill proposes to replace independent regulatory bodies such as the Medical Council of India (MCI), Dental Council of India (DCI), Pharmacy Council of India and Nursing Council of India with new national councils, including a Paramedical Council.
The Bill seeks to consolidate the law in certain disciplines of health sector and promote human resources in that sector and provide for mechanism for the determination, maintenance, coordination and regulation of standards of health education throughout the country.
It would also be the task of the Commission to ensure effective use of linkages in the entire health system.
